I see it's been more than a year since my last entry, and as xena_2001de points out, it would be nice if I let everyone know whether I was alive and writing or not.
Well, clearly I am, and unfortunately I haven't been. In the last year, I got married and became addicted to anime. I leave it to you to figure out which consumed the bulk of my time :). But I *do* have about half-an-outline of an independent!Harry fic from last year that I have suddenly figured out what I want to do with. In order not to get into the same mess with this as I did with Atonement, I won't start writing the final draft of the first chapters until I have at least the framework of the later chapters worked out. In other words, I won't start posting it until June but once I start I should be able to post on a regular weekly schedule.
In apology, I offer up this musing:
( Magical population of Britain (yet another debate) )
As I'm sure you can guess, my next fic is unexpectedly Quidditch heavy. 'Unexpectedly' because I usually skip over the Quidditch scenes, but I intend to treat it with a slightly different tone to the books. Thus, if anyone who is knowledgeable about Quidditch is willing to beta, I would be more than grateful!

9:25 pm - Games of power 3
|
A very belated chapter :). Anyone interested in beta'ing for this story, please email me.
This is for adults only, please do not click if you are likely to be offended. A slightly milder version will be available on ff.net shortly, for those who prefer.
Disclaimer: Anything you recognise belongs to J.K. Rowling, etc.. I own nothing, make no money from anything, and am writing this purely for personal enjoyment.
Warnings: HP/SS slash, OOCness, plot-light story, d/s, lots of pre-story character death. If you don’t like the dark stuff, don’t read this.

7:25 pm - Games of Power
|
I have a new chapter of Games just about ready to go out (yes, finally. Yes, I know it's not atonement, but I am trying :) ). If anyone is still willing to beta this (both a full mature audience version and a censored one for ff.net), please contact me at writingamber(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk.
In other news, I should be wrapping up 'Life after Life' in a few chapters, at which time I'll give it a final edit and load it up here, and possibly look for other suitable archives. Anyone prepared to look it over would also be much appreciated!
Thanks for your patience, all - Amber_and_Ash

3:07 pm - New fic
|
I have a new fic available at ff.net now: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2688215/1/
It's a Snape mentors Harry fic, with no significant pairings, and is my take on those most treacherous of waters... the vampire fic! I doubt I'll be able to avoid all cliches, but I'll give it my best shot.
"Wait!" I hear you cry. "What are you thinking starting a new story when you have all these others, neglected and unfinished?"
I have only two things to say in my defense: 1. This fic is much more thoroughly drafted out than the others, so even if I run out of steam, I should still be able to limp to a conclusion. 2. With any luck, coming back to the fandom will motivate me to update Games and Atonement.
(oh, and 3. No point in leaving the poor thing mouldering on my hard-drive)
Have fun!

5:53 pm - The Cambiare Podentes Brouhaha
|
Between one day and the next, a fiction disappeared - 'Cambiare Podentes' by aspenlight / Sakura Michel. It was eerie. Freaky, even. The story was stripped from all archives; all mentions of it in the above livejournals were deleted. If it weren't for a few stray recommendations and summaries, I might have convinced myself it was written by someone else, called something else, something. ( Read more... ) Don't get me wrong, I'll miss the story - pleasantly written, one of my favourite storylines, and updated frequently. But the drama.. ah, that's a different story entirely.

12:15 pm - Ramblings on Angst
|
My general thoughts on what I do and don’t enjoy about angst in fanfiction. It’ll probably be expanded in the future.
WARNING: the majority of stories used as examples below are NC-17 slash from Harry Potter, Buffy, and X-Files, because that’s what I read. Some are WIP’s and most are fairly lengthy. You don’t have to read them to follow my argument.

Do you know what I despise? Almost good stories. You see, if I come across a bad story, I can hit the back button in less than 30 seconds. But almost good stories... they're just good enough to convince you to carry on reading, but just bad enough to be FREAKING IRRITATING.
It's the non-standard punctuation or the author's notes. It's the well-written dialogue with ridiculous plot twists. It's the beautiful angst scenes destroyed by OOC 'darling's, 'sweetheart's or other cutesy nicknames. It's the ludicrous 'emerald-orbed Gryffindor', the ladled-on-with-a-tanker 'twinkling eyes', 'lemon drops', 'Gred and Forge', and Ron talking with his mouth full. It's the excellent premise that's happening just a little too fast. It's the angst that just doesn't make any sense. It's the story that takes a sudden 90 degree turn in theme.
But, hey, it's not that big a deal, right? I can ignore it. Maybe the author will stop. But they don't. So I swear at the computer - but carry on reading. By the time I'm finished, I wish I had hit that damned back button. The prospect of leaving a review brings up all sorts of sarcastic insults to mind. But it would inevitably be a flame rather than a crit, so I don't. I just search desperately for a *decent* WIP to wash the mud off. Until the next almost good story.

After the events at bad rper's suck where someone was making very incoherent arguments about why fanfiction was the moral equivalent of rape (it got fandom wanked! My first time.) I decided to indulge myself in a little immaturity and made an icon about it:

It'a a photomanip, since I can't draw to save my life. It was inspired by Youlanda's own pictures and the comments she made in the thread. Fairly obviously it is intended as a parody, and used without permission.

I just participated in the 'Master and the Wolf' 30 minute challenge. I managed about 700 words. I had to edit afterwards, but I tried to keep true to the intention of the challenge and only corrected the disjoint sentences, spelling and grammar. I was typing at about half my top speed (40 words a minute), but I can not imagine how people manage stories of >1000 words in just half an hour. Anyway, it was great fun, and it's still open today if you want to take part:

Well, mid-april has come and long gone and I still can't face Atonement. In apologies, I've resurrected an old RL/SS story that I've been hanging on to. It's *the* classic RL/SS Mpreg story - full moon, and Remus is looking for a mate...
It's episodic, and I have problems with the style, but Pushkin convinced me to put it out there:
Pit of Voles
I am working on games 3, and expect it to be ready some time by the end of the month. I'm also considering starting a underworld/vampire story but I'm a little worried about it falling into fandom cliche. *shrug*.

9:50 pm - Indefinite delays
|
Quick update to reassure everyone that I'm still alive, but unfortunately not writing.
I've been having trouble with my rewrite of 'Atonement', and that combined with some other RL issues means I've pretty much put my fanfic writing on hold until mid-april :(.

9:00 pm - Games of Power Chapter 2

Just updated Games of Power:
pit of voles
I no longer have control over 'my' homepage, so until I organise a new one, that's it. I seem to have kept control over my live-journals, though, so I'm not as upset as I might have been. It, no doubt, 'built character'.

My yahoo account was just hijacked!
Some-one went in and changed my password. And since I filled out the application form with nonsense, I have no recourse in getting it back.
Please note that no emails sent from that address are from me, and that my home-page is no longer under my control. I'm trying to do some damage control, will get back with more details.

Hey, everyone!
Two bits of news for you today.
News 1: After much discussion and thought, I have decided to rewrite Atonement. Some elements simply weren't working. Please do let me know what elements you really want kept, and what I can safely discard. Hopefully, the quality of the rewrite will make up for the delay!
News 2: I'm experimenting with starting an organised critique group for Harry Potter fanfiction. Please check out http://www.livejournal.com/users/hpcrit and tell me what you think. Feel free to pass the news on to anyone else you think may be interested.
Oh! News 3: My first SS/RL story is up at Master and the Wolf. I highly recommend wandering over there - there are some excellent submissions.

10:32 pm - Atonement 10 up!!!
|
Yay! I've just posted Atonement 10: home page or pit of voles
Games 2 should be posted the week of 19/01/04, and Atonement 11 week of 10/02/04.
The second chapter of Serenities adventures is ready right now:
( chap 2 )
Some plot elements (Hermione feeding Tiddlyworm to Crookshanks) dedicated to Ruhgozler. Have some-thing weirdly impossible you'd like added? Just ask!

9:53 pm - Story idea
|
I'm still waiting for my chapter back from beta, which has given me way too much time to think - always a dangerous thing.
Anyway, after perusing deleterius and pottersues , I've started wondering if I could write a realistic OC.
Canon leaves plenty of opportunities - the two unnamed Gryffindor girls in Harry's year, almost any Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. It wouldn't be a story about Harry from their point of view, but a story about everything that goes on at Hogwarts that Harry and the gang are too busy to notice. How does your average student deal with rumours about Voldemort's return, Harry's insanity/potential evilness, or Dumbledore's 'incompetancy'? What kind of strain do family politics and House politics put on children who aren't well enough informed to make a decision? It must be a terrifying time to grow up - it must be affecting these kids in similar ways to the evacuated kids during the London Blitz - and their story is worth telling.
The problem is, I don't read this type of fic. I stick to slash and Harry/Snape mentor/father fics. I have no idea if it's already been done superbly or impossible to do well. I don't look forward to slogging through a bazillion MS's to find examples. Is this something I should leave to those active in those fields, or is it worth giving a shot? Any advice or recs would be greatly appreciated!

Well, Atonement 10 (Bringing on the Darkness), has just gone to beta. I probably won't make the update before the new year, but it'll be close. YAY! Next up - Games of Power 2, in about three weeks. I'm looking forward to writing it now - Atonement is my main commitment, but I've been finding it very hard to write the Emotional!Angst chappies the story is going through. I think that's why I rebelled and wrote the Mary-sue. Hmm.. I've been having some ideas for a second chapter on that too...

8:24 pm - Story Death
|
In an act of what can only be described as an act of extreme stupidity, I managed to delete my 'planning' file for atonement. *cries*.
About a page of chap 11 had already been written, and all the major plot points for the story. In theory, it's all in my head somewhere, but damn it! It's not much in number of words ( probably less than 2000), but it's all the working out I had for pacing, and all those little cool ideas I didn't want to forget. It's going to take me forever to work it out again.
Bleh! I promised I would have chapter 10 out by the end of the year - three more days left. I'm going to try, but after this *stupid* *stupid* act, I'm not sure I'm going to make it.
